These guides are intended to give you a brief
walk-through on the configuration of Radio Frequency communications on
various portable terminals.
Overview
These guides refer to 802.11b Wireless Ethernet,
sometimes called WiFi. Each portable terminal and access point must
be equipped with a WiFi radio to communicate on the network.
To access the wireless network, there are three
basic settings that must be configured. These are:
- ESSID. This is the name of the
wireless network, and is used to distinguish between networks in close
proximity.
- WEP settings. This controls
Encryption on the network, and is used to control security and prevent
unauthorized snooping on the network.
- TCP/IP Address. This is the network
address of the device. Every computer on the network must have a
unique IP address, following certain rules. Some networks
are configured to use a protocol called DHCP which automatically assigns
IP addresses to devices as they attach to the network.

These guides are just an introduction, and
are not a comprehensive reference for all aspects of RF communications or
security. If you are unsure of the implications of security on your
RF network, you should consult with a qualified network administrator for
assistance. |
